BGSMath

Created in 2013, the Barcelona Graduate School of Mathematics (BGSMath) is a joint effort between the research groups in mathematics from four leading universities in the Barcelona metropolitan area (University of Barcelona (UB), Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), Catalan Polytechnic University (UPC)) and the CRM. Its primary goal is to actively provide and support doctoral and postdoctoral training at the highest level in an international environment, in order to foster highly qualified scientific research.

In 2015 the BGSMath received the accreditation as a Unit of Excellence “María de Maeztu” (2015-2019), awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) within the National Programme for Fostering Excellence in Scientific and Technical Research. This recognition is meant to fund highly competitive strategic research programmes in the frontiers of knowledge that “are among the best in the world in their respective scientific areas”. This programme aims to recognise excellence in stable research centres and includes a grant of 2 million Euros over four years.

BGSMath is the only unit in mathematics in Spain holding this distinction.

Since its creation, the BGSMath has experienced a significant growth, becoming a consolidated unit with more than 40 doctoral students and 12 postdoctoral researchers.

The BGSMath's Mission

The idea to set up a functional cooperative and collaborative structure for mathematics in Barcelona started several years ago. The process was driven by the obvious principle that joining efforts, enhancing collaborations, sharing infrastructures, and discussing and implementing together formulas for insight and innovation could result in an enormous benefit for all mathematicians in Barcelona and, by extension, for mathematics everywhere.

The successful establishment of the BGSMath -a unique initiative in Spain- owes to the clear vision and open attitude of all its components and partners. Several favourable conditions are contributing to its very positive development. The strength of the BGSMath unit lies on its very nature: it revolves around the mathematical research, training and knowledge and technology transfer in the Barcelona area.

The fact that this structure was conceived, crafted and accepted solely by the researchers themselves rather than being an institutional initiative gives full credibility to its main commitments: to enhance mathematical excellence, to train exceptional Ph.D. students, to build capacity and to leverage funding from the private and public sector, among others.
