Aquest cap de setmana, el Centre de Recerca Matemàtica ha participat a la 18a Festa de la Ciència de Barcelona amb l’activitat Neural Code, un taller interactiu per explorar com el cervell transforma els senyals neuronals en moviment. L’activitat, organitzada en col·laboració amb l’IDIBAPS, va permetre al públic experimentar en primera persona el registre i la transmissió de senyals musculars, i va servir per apropar la recerca matemàtica i neurocientífica a la ciutadania.
Aquest cap de setmana, el Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) ha participat en la divuitena edició de la Festa de la Ciència de Barcelona, un esdeveniment que ha tornat a omplir els espais del Born, la plaça Comercial i el parc de la Ciutadella d’experiments, tallers i espectacles científics. En total, prop de 18.000 persones de totes les edats han passat per alguna de les 164 activitats organitzades per més de 120 institucions i centres de recerca, convertint de nou la Festa en un gran aparador de la recerca que es fa a la ciutat.

En aquest marc, el CRM hi va ser present amb el taller interactiu Neural Code, una proposta per acostar el públic als mecanismes que connecten el cervell amb el moviment. A través d’una experiència directa, els visitants van poder veure com es registren els senyals elèctrics dels músculs i com, gràcies a una interfície humà-humà, aquests senyals poden activar el moviment del braç d’una altra persona. L’activitat va incloure també reptes de memòria de treball i una introducció a alguns dels codis neuronals que governen el pensament i l’acció.
Una activitat en col·laboració amb l’IDIBAPS
El taller va ser conduït pels investigadors del Grup de Neurociència Computacional del CRM, Alexandre Hyafil i Alexandra Antoniadou, en col·laboració amb els investigadors de l’IDIBAPS (Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer) Jaime de la Rocha, cap del grup Dinàmica de circuits corticals, Balma Serrano i Konstantinos Chatzimichail.

El grup d’Hyafil treballa per entendre com el cervell transforma la informació sensorial en percepcions i decisions, combinant models teòrics, experiments psicofísics i tècniques de machine learning per analitzar dades conductuals i neuronals. La seva recerca estableix ponts entre la matemàtica aplicada i la neurociència cognitiva.
El grup de De la Rocha, per la seva banda, estudia com emergeixen processos cognitius complexos, com la memòria de treball, la percepció o la presa de decisions, a partir de l’activitat de xarxes neuronals interconnectades. Mitjançant experiments de conducta en rosegadors i models computacionals, investiguen els mecanismes neuronals subjacents als dèficits cognitius presents en trastorns com l’esquizofrènia o l’encefalitis anti-NMDAR.

Amb la aquesta activitat, el CRM ha volgut acostar a totes les persones assistents la capacitat de les matemàtiques per dialogar amb altres disciplines, com la neurociència, i per obrir-se al conjunt de la ciutadania a través d’activitats participatives i divulgatives. La Festa de la Ciència continua essent un dels grans espais de trobada entre la recerca i la societat a Barcelona.
