After a month at the UAB’s Biblioteca de Ciència i Tecnologia, the CRM exhibition Les matemàtiques de Gaudí has moved to the University of Barcelona. It is on display at the CRAI Biblioteca de Matemàtiques i Informàtica from 2 to 30 November 2026.

The exhibition looks at Gaudí’s architecture through the mathematics behind it, in eight posters. It starts with a hanging chain, the catenary, which turned upside down becomes an arch that stands without buttresses. From there it follows the hanging model of cords and small weights that Gaudí used to design the church of the Colònia Güell, the ruled surfaces of the Sagrada Família, the double-twist column and the 7.5-metre module of the basilica. It ends with the almost-magic square that the sculptor Josep Maria Subirachs placed on the Passion façade.

The scientific adviser is Marc Calvo-Schwarzwälder, a mathematics lecturer at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and an affiliated researcher at the CRM. The exhibition is part of the Gaudí Year, which marks the centenary of the architect’s death in 1926.
The exhibition also has a version on the CRM website, with interactive figures for each chapter, six classroom activities in Catalan and English, and annotated further reading. The library has published a post about the exhibition on its blog, and the CRAI has announced it in its news section.
