Stochastic particle systems and Macroscopic limits in Active matter
Sign inOverview
Active matter systems consist of large collections of self-propelled particles and arise in a wide range of biological and physical settings, including bird flocks, fish schools, and bacterial suspensions. In contrast to passive systems, whose dynamics are typically driven by gradients of an energy, active systems are intrinsically out of equilibrium and can display rich and complex forms of collective behaviour.
In these two lectures, I will introduce stochastic particle models for active matter and discuss mathematical techniques for studying interacting particle systems and their collective behaviour. The first hour will provide an introduction to the main ideas and tools, while the second will focus on their application to a specific class of active matter systems. The second hour will be largely self-contained, so that participants already familiar with the area may attend it independently.
In the second hour, I will focus on a lattice gas consisting of a mixture of active and passive particles with excluded-volume interactions. Starting from the microscopic stochastic dynamics, I will derive the exact hydrodynamic limit for the particle densities, given by a system of nonlinear partial differential equations. I will then analyse the resulting macroscopic model and discuss the different types of solutions it exhibits, including phase-separated states and travelling solutions.

Maria Bruna is a Royal Society University Research Fellow at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford, where her research focuses on stochastic interacting particle systems and their applications to biological and industrial processes. Until 2024 she was a University Lecturer at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics in Cambridge, and in 2021 she held a Humboldt Research Fellowship at FAU Erlangen. She was a Junior Research Fellow at St John’s College, Oxford, between 2013 and 2018, and completed her DPhil in Applied Mathematics at Oxford in 2012 under the supervision of Jon Chapman. She is from Barcelona, and graduated in Mathematics and Industrial Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

Sustainable events
We are committed to organising sustainable events that minimise environmental impact and create a positive legacy for the host community. We support organisers in designing events aligned with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, reducing negative environmental impacts and promoting responsible practices. All materials provided during our activities are responsibly sourced, including recycled pens and plastic-free badges. We work with responsible suppliers, and our catering partners use fully compostable materials while offering vegetarian and vegan options, with at least one event day being fully vegetarian. After the activity
