BGSMath course
Mathematics in the age of AI
Joan Bruna and Jaume de Dios Pont, New York University (NYU)
17, 18, 21 and 22 December 2026
Auditorium, Centre de Recerca Matemàtica, Bellaterra
Eight sessions, two a day, 12 hours in total
About the course
This small course covers some snippets of the modern interactions between mathematics and AI. It will be roughly divided into three sections:
- Part 1: Foundations of generative modeling: transport, diffusion and inference.
- Part 2: A tour of reasoning models: language modeling, reinforcement learning, stylized settings.
- Part 3: Lean Formalization.
Total hours: 12 (approximately 4 per section).
Lecturers
Joan Bruna
Courant Institute and Center for Data Science, New York University (NYU)
Joan Bruna is a Full Professor of Computer Science, Data Science and Mathematics (affiliated) at the Courant Institute and the Center for Data Science, New York University. He belongs to the CILVR group (Computational Intelligence, Learning, Vision and Robotics) and co-founded the MaD (Math and Data) group. His research touches several areas of machine learning, signal processing and high-dimensional statistics, with a particular interest in the mathematical foundations of machine learning: optimisation, representation and statistical aspects, and the interplay between them. He is also interested in developing applications to computational science, in areas such as geophysics and climate modelling. In spring 2020 he was a Member of the Institute for Advanced Study, during its Special Year on Optimization, Statistics and Theoretical Machine Learning, and he is a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Computational Mathematics of the Flatiron Institute (Simons Foundation).
Jaume de Dios Pont
Center for Data Science, New York University (NYU)
Jaume de Dios Pont is a CDS Faculty Fellow at the NYU Center for Data Science, where he works on harmonic analysis, spectral theory, convex geometry and AI for mathematics. Originally from Barcelona, he received his PhD from UCLA in 2023 under the supervision of Terence Tao, followed by a research internship at Microsoft Research and a postdoc at ETH Zürich with Svitlana Mayboroda. His graduate studies were supported by a UCLA Dissertation Year Fellowship, a “la Caixa” postgraduate fellowship and an ESOP fellowship at ETH Zürich, among others.
