From 2 to 4 September 2026, the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) hosted the BMS-BGSMath Junior Meeting 2026, a three-day event jointly organised by the Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) and the Barcelona Graduate School of Mathematics (BGSMath), with the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) hosting the event.

The meeting is part of a long-standing collaboration between the two institutions, established through a memorandum of understanding signed in 2016 to promote scientific exchange, mobility and collaboration among doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers and faculty members. Through initiatives such as the Junior Meeting, both graduate schools seek to strengthen research links between the mathematical communities of Barcelona and Berlin while fostering an international and multicultural research environment.

This fifth edition brought together young researchers working across a wide range of mathematical disciplines and featured three plenary lectures by researchers from both institutions.

  • Gissell Estrada (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and CRM) opened the scientific programme with a talk on mathematical and computational methods for estimating parameters in cell-cell adhesion models from partial trajectory data, combining stochastic particle systems, partial differential equations and Bayesian inference techniques.
  • On the second day, Christoph von Tycowicz (Zuse Institute Berlin) presented recent developments in geometric learning and statistical inference on manifolds, highlighting the growing interplay between differential geometry, statistics and machine learning, with applications ranging from medical imaging to computational anatomy.
  • The final plenary lecture was delivered by Guillem Blanco (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and CRM), who introduced the complex zeta function of a singularity and discussed how its analytic properties connect with important invariants in singularity theory, pointing towards several open research questions in the field.

Alongside the plenary lectures, participants delivered more than thirty contributed talks in parallel sessions. These presentations reflected the breadth of current mathematical research, covering topics such as statistical inference under privacy constraints, algebraic and geometric statistics, graph theory and combinatorics, stochastic and random dynamical systems, geometric analysis, partial differential equations, mathematical physics, optimisation, inverse problems, machine learning, complex systems, topology, algebraic geometry and dynamical systems.

Beyond the scientific programme, the meeting provided numerous opportunities for discussion and networking, helping participants exchange ideas, explore future collaborations and strengthen ties between the mathematical communities of Barcelona and Berlin.

The 2026 edition once again highlighted the value of sustained international collaboration in advancing mathematical research and creating opportunities for the next generation of mathematicians.
