Call for the Organisation of Intensive Research Programmes (IRPs) in 2028
Description
The CRM invites proposals for Intensive Research Programmes (IRPs) to be held throughout 2028.
IRPs bring together researchers from around the world for an intensive period of research, collaboration and discussion in any area of mathematics or the mathematical sciences. Their aim is to address open problems, explore new developments and identify future research directions.
Programmes run for 3 to 5 months, between September and July, and combine research visits with a number of scientific activities. These typically include:
Weekly research seminars.
International conferences and/or workshops.
Advanced courses for graduate students.
Daily interaction and collaboration among visiting researchers.
Participants may include senior researchers, postdoctoral researchers and advanced PhD students. Researchers are expected to be based at the CRM on a full-time basis during their visit, which should last at least two weeks.
Organisational Support and Resources
The CRM provides organisational and administrative support throughout the programme, access to its facilities and research environment, and assistance with accommodation arrangements for research visitors.
Each programme receives basic funding, which may be complemented by external funding obtained by the organisers. The CRM will assist the Scientific Committee with the administrative work involved in applying for external funding.
The CRM can host up to 16 research visitors simultaneously during an IRP.
Scientific Committee and Selection Criteria
Each programme must have a Scientific Committee responsible for:
Designing the scientific programme and planning its activities.
Preparing a list of proposed research visitors, ranked according to priority.
Encouraging interaction among participants and their involvement in the programme.
Submitting a final report within two months of the programme's completion.
At least one member of the Scientific Committee must be from a Catalan university or research institution, and at least one committee member must be present at the CRM throughout the programme.
Gender balance must be taken into account throughout the organisation of the programme. The organising and scientific committees are expected to have a balanced gender representation, and organisers should make every effort to ensure gender balance when inviting speakers and proposing research visitors.
Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Scientific quality and expected impact.
Interdisciplinary aspects.
Participation of young researchers.
Gender balance in the organising and scientific committees, as well as among speakers and research visitors.
Availability of additional funding sources.
Application Procedure
Researchers interested in organising an IRP should submit their proposal by 30 April 2027.
The proposal should include a description of the research programme, its scientific objectives, the proposed Scientific Committee, an outline of the activities and expected participants, and a preliminary budget specifying the expected expenses and sources of funding.
A budget template and an Excel file to provide information about the proposed programme participants will be available for download as part of the application process. Both documents should be completed and submitted together with the proposal.
Submission Deadline and Notification of Decisions
30 April 2027: Deadline for submission of proposals.
Mid-May 2027: The CRM will communicate its decision to the applicants.
Please note that the CRM can only confirm its involvement in the organisation of a programme once the proposals have been evaluated and the decisions communicated.
If a proposal is approved, the CRM and the Scientific Committee will agree on the final dates and duration of the programme, the list of participants and their research visit periods, the available financial support and the final scientific programme.
The agreement will be signed by the CRM Director and the representative appointed by the Scientific Committee.
The CRM will act as the organisational unit for all activities included in the programme and will provide administrative support for their organisation and the accommodation arrangements.
For any enquiries regarding the call or the preparation of a proposal, please contact crmactivitats@crm.cat.
All activities organised by the CRM must comply with the CRM Code of Conduct.
