abstract

The Dynamics of Billiards: Between Conservative and Dissipative Regimes

Given a convex region in the plane, we can examine the associated billiard dynamics: a massless point moves along a straight line within the region and then bounces off the boundary elastically. These dynamics, introduced by G.D. Birkhoff, have been extensively studied in the literature. We will present some classical and new results, discuss other possible versions of billiard dynamics, and explore (in varying degrees of detail, depending on the time remaining) what happens when the rebound is no longer elastic but subject to dissipation.

Assistant Professor
CEREMADE, Université Paris-Dauphine PSL
Paris, France

Since September 2021, I am an assistant professor in Mathematics at the Université Paris Dauphine-PSL. I am a member of the CEREMADE (Centre de Recherche en Mathématiques de la Décision).

I am a junior member of IUF from October 2026 (for the period 2026-2031).

Before that, from November 2019 to August 2021, I was Post-doc of Fondation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris at IMJ-PRG and CEREMADE (Paris, France) under the supervision of Jean-Pierre Marco and Jacques Féjoz.

I prepared my PhD thesis Asymptotic Maslov indices at Avignon Université (Avignon, France) under the supervision of Professor Marie-Claude Arnaud and Andrea Venturelli.

My main research interests are dynamical systems. I am interested in Maslov index, low-dimensional dynamics, billiards, Reeb Flows, symplectic and conformally symplectic dynamics, hyperbolic dynamics, ergodic theory…

scam warning

We are aware of a number of current scams targeting participants at CRM activities concerning registration or accommodation bookings. If you are approached by a third party (eg travellerpoint.org, Conference Committee, Global Travel Experts or Royal Visit) asking for booking or payment details, please ignore them.

Please remember:
i) CRM never uses third parties to do our administration for events: messages will come directly from CRM staff
ii) CRM will never ask participants for credit card or bank details
iii) If you have any doubt about an email you receive please get in touch

Sustainable Events

We are committed to organising sustainable events that minimise environmental impact and create a positive legacy for the host community. We support organisers in designing events aligned with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, reducing negative environmental impacts and promoting responsible practices.

All materials provided during our activities are responsibly sourced, including recycled pens and plastic-free badges. We work with responsible suppliers, and our catering partners use fully compostable materials while offering vegetarian and vegan options, with at least one event day being fully vegetarian.
