The BGSMath mission
The Barcelona Graduate School of Mathematics (BGSMath) was created in 2014 as a collaborative initiative of the research groups in mathematics of four main universities, and an international research centre located in the Barcelona area:
Its primary objective is to provide doctoral and postdoctoral training at the highest level in an international environment.
In 2015, BGSMath was awarded a “María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence” distinction by the Spanish Government. These recognitions are meant to fund “highly competitive strategic research programmes in the frontiers of knowledge” that “are among the best in the world in their respective scientific areas”. The financial support over four years was for a total of €2,000,000. During that period, BGSMath was the only unit in mathematics in Spain holding this distinction.
With the completion of the María de Maeztu programme in 2019, BGSMath became a delegated committee of the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM).

What we organise
BGSMath courses
Graduate courses on a single topic, taught over a few weeks by local and visiting researchers.
HYPATIA
The graduate summer school, with courses by leading researchers, aimed primarily at PhD students and early-career researchers.
BIMR
Barcelona Introduction to Mathematical Research, a summer programme for mathematics students from any university, mainly in their third or fourth year. Each student works on a research project with a tutor and attends minicourses on introduction to research.
BMS-BGSMath Junior Meeting
Young researchers from the Berlin Mathematical School and BGSMath, meeting in Barcelona and Berlin in turn since 2017. It grew out of an agreement the two schools signed in 2016 to boost collaboration between them.
Training for PhD candidates
Sessions on the work around research: structuring an article, LaTeX, giving a talk, and the paths open after a PhD.
