Advanced course's information

The advanced course on Operator algebras and dynamical systems will provide the graduate students and junior researchers in attendance with an introduction to the essential ideas underlying recent advances in classification theory. Topics covered will include K-theory for C*-algebras and crossed products, classification theory for C*-algebras, Cartan subalgebras and groupoid C*-algebras, and Rockhlin dimension for dynamical systems.

The first topic will focus on the computation of K-theory for crossed product C*-algebras, including fundamental tools such as the Connes--Thom isomorphism for crossed products by R, the Pimsner--Voiculescu sequence for crossed products by Z, and the six-term sequence for crossed products by finite groups.
The second topic will outline the basic ideas and structure theory of groupoid C*-algebras for étale groupoids. It will outline the notions of diagonal, and Cartan, subalgebras of C*-algebras as described by Kumjian and Renault, and their role in the groupoid approach to Dixmier--Douady classification theory. Finally, it will discuss Renault's reconstruction theorem, and its role in Matsumoto and Matui's classification of shifts of finite type up to continuous orbit equivalence.
The final topic will begin by describing the the Rokhlin property for classical dynamical systems and its role in the theory of crossed products. It will discuss the notions of Rokhlin dimension for dynamical systems, and dynamic asymptotic dimension for groupoids, and outline the role of these notions in calculating nuclear dimension for crossed products and groupoid C*-algebras.
