We will joyfully discuss how experimental data can be interpreted in terms of neural communications. In particular we will look at hypotheses related to neural oscillations (communication-through-coherence) and assess its meaningfulness from an information-theoretic point of view. Hopefully we can turn this into a relevant and coherent talk.

18:15 PI, PhD and postdoc relationship. The JC case of study - Joao Barbosa and Genís Prat (pdf)
Although PhD students should have many questions during seminars, their participation tends to be very low. We believe that there is fear of asking and this is due to intimidation issues. Following previous evidence of PI’s interference on students decision-making [1], we ought to lower the students questioning threshold. We will present new data that we have collected during recent Journal Club sessions, making explicit that students do in fact refrain themselves from questioning.

During this debate, we will anonymously collect the reasons for this issue and do a posteriori discussions on what to do to improve.

19:15: The ethics of animal experimentation: an unpleasant territory - Vicky Puig
The ethical aspects of experimenting with animals are a very sensitive and conflicting topic, a truly annoying and unpleasant territory for many researchers. Even whether we should use animals at all for our experiments is a matter of fiery debate. For people that actually accept that experimenting with animals is necessary to achieve higher goals, how animals are treated and their pain minimized is very controversial. In this session I will describe the ethical issues concerning the experimentation with laboratory animals (with particular emphasis on my own experience working with monkeys) and how we deal with them.

09:00: New methods to illuminate brain structure and dynamics. - Pablo Jercog

As in many biological disciplines in science, discoveries drove or were driven by technological developments. Due to the fragility, difficult accessibility and complexity at multi-scales levels of the brain tissue, special tools were created specifically for neuroscience. We will review the main techniques, their contributions and limitations and how new methods have been developed to satisfy the need of the answering the questions at different times of neuroscience modern history. From extracellular recordings and voltage clamp techniques in vitro to freely moving animal performing complex behaviors, from single synapse resolution to large populations on neurons (~10.000 cells) simultaneously at different brain areas over long periods of time (days to weeks).

The idea of synchronization is often invoked in the neuroscience literature. However, a precise definition of the synchronization phenomenon seems not to be fully established. Here I discuss various definitions of synchronization and mechanisms leading to macroscopic oscillations in neuronal networks.

16:00: Reduced Models vs. Detailed Models in Neuroscience - Beatrice Jobst (pdf)
There are many different mathematical and computational approaches of how to simulate the brain's activity or its behavioral output. The main differences lie in what exactly we are interested in modeling, whether if it's neuronal firing rates or how the brain makes decisions and with that also the scale or level the model we are applying operates in.

We will discuss different levels of brain models and the advantages and disadvantages and usability of reduced models and detailed models in neuroscience. Relating to this we will talk about the Human Brain Project, the European Flagship project, whose original aim was the detailed simulation of the entire brain and which has provoked a lot of criticism in the community.
17:00: Novel IT tools for the lab. - Jaime de la Rocha
Information technology tools are being developed at a very fast pace. Simultaneously, researchers are expected to be more and more productive.
In this discussion we will share novel IT tools that can benefit our productivity in the lab. We will review the pros and cons of the applications we use to write papers and grants and discuss what is coming. We will also share novel ways to store, manage and share bibliography, ecloud services to share and backup data, and social network tools to gain visibility. We will end by reviewing good habits in the use of email and new software to work collaboratively.

While most people seem to think that sexism and other kinds of discrimination lie behind us, evidence is accumulating that women and other minorities are still having a hard time advancing in academia. We will review some statistical data on this issue, introduce possible mechanisms, and start a discussion about what can be done about it.
