Schedule summary
-
- Oct. 1: Program participants arrival and welcome coffee/tea
- Oct. 2-3: recollections on polytopes and (oriented) matroids
- Oct. 6-17: research school
- Oct. 20 – Nov. 21: research projects + seminars + visitors
- Nov. 24-28: conference
Preliminaries (Oct. 1-3)
The program participants are expected to arrive on Oct. 1. There will be a welcome coffee/reception in the afternoon.
Oct. 2-3 will be dedicated to some Recollections on polyhedral geometry and (oriented) matroids by Kolja Knauer (Universitat de Barcelona-CRM) and Vincent Pilaud (Universitat de Barcelona-CRM). These preliminary lectures will cover basic knowledge to prepare for the research school.
Research school (Oct. 6-10 and Oct. 13-17)
The research school will consist of 4 advanced courses.
Polytope week (Oct. 6-10)
-
- Carolina Benedetti (Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia), Perspectives on flags of matroids and positroids
- Raman Sanyal (Goethe-Universität Frankfurt, Germany), Moduli polytopes: parametrizing combinatorial structures with polytopes
Matroid week (Oct. 13-17)
-
- Laura Anderson (Binghamton University, USA), Intersection properties in oriented matroids
- Geoff Whittle (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand), The impossibility of chaos: how structure arises in matroid theory
Research projects (Oct. 6 – Nov. 28)
The program participants will be proposed a collection of research problems (from the local organizers and the lecturers of the research school). We expect the participants to organize small working groups on these projects. The projects will be monitored by the local organizers, with regular progress reports.
We expect the participants to present some progress on their various projects at the end of the program, during the week of the closing conference.
Seminars (Oct. 20 – Nov. 21)
The program will run two seminars:
-
- program seminar (run by the organizers)
- student seminar (run by the participants)
Research visitors (Oct. 20 – Nov. 21)
Besides the research school and the conference, the program will host a few research visitors:
-
- Spencer Backman (University of Vermont, USA)
- Asilata Bapat (The Australian National University, Australia)
- Federico Castillo (Pontificia Universidad Catolica, Chile)

RELATED EVENTS
Note that there is also a conference Beyond permutahedra and associahedra at CIRM (Luminy, France) on Dec. 1-5, 2025.
LOCATION
All research activities will be held at the CRM Barcelona (map) on the campus of the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (map).
All accommodations booked by the program will be either at the Vila Universitaria (map) or at the Hotel Campus (map) at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona.
To get to the UAB campus from Barcelona, take the S2 train of FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya) from Plaça Catalunya to Universitat Autonoma. This train takes about 45 minutes, runs from 5:45 to 23:50 (even 2:12 on Friday-Saturday-Sunday), and passes approximately every 10 minutes during the day, 20-30 minutes in the evening and weekends.
Here is a map of the UAB campus.
