Do’s and Don’t’s about giving math talks
In this talk we will give some practical advice on giving talks about mathematics. We will address content, form and performance, in an attempt to review what we do right and what we do wrong in one of the most important activities in our profession.
Universitat de Barcelona - CRM
I received my Ph.D. in 1995 from Boston University under the supervision of Robert L. Devaney. I am now a full professor at Universitat de Barcelona and the co-leader of the research group Holodyn, working in complex dynamical systems. I was awarded an Icrea Academia award in 2021 and a Chern Professorship at MSRI (Berkeley) in 2022. I supervised five Ph.D. students and several postdoctoral fellows. Jointly with Bodil Branner (DTU Denmark) I am the author of the book “Quasiconformal Surgery in Holomorphic Dynamics”, Cambridge University Press (2014). I have published over 50 papers in leading journals including Inventiones Mathematicae, Advances in Mathematics or Transactions of the AMS.
LaTeX: tips and tricks
LaTeX is a software system for document preparation wich encourages authors not to worry too much about the appearance of their contents but to concentrate on getting the right content. In this talk we will see some particularities of this system, including the typesetting of formulas, tables, graphics and the Beamer class for presentations.
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona - CRM
I started as assistant in the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), where I joined the PhD program in Mathematics under the supervision of Prof. Jaume Aguadé. I finished the PhD in 2001, and from February 2002 to January 2003 I had a postdoc position in Université Paris 13. Since 2007 I am associate professor in the UAB.
I have done research stays at Université Paris 13, Centre Bernoulli (EPFL – Lausanne), Insitut Mittag-Leffler, University of Copenhagen and University of Kyoto.
I have advised the PhD thesis of Toni Lozano, defended in April 2016.
2on part: Practice Session
📅 March 30th, 2023
📍 Pol-1 (CRM)
A practice session will be held on March 30th, focused on how to apply the tools and guidelines from the first session of the training.
The session, aimed at a maximum of 10 people, will consist of students’ brief presentations of their research and a collective reflection part.
