WOMEN IN MATHEMATICS

The Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) is committed to actively address the issues that hinder the role of women in mathematics. As a public research institute, we are concerned about the loss of women from mathematics at higher levels of research and teaching, and the weaknesses and missed opportunities that the absence of female mathematicians represents for the progress of mathematics research. This pledge is founded on the principles of fairness and justice in order to fight against discrimination of any nature. The CRM, as a public research institute, understands its responsibility in the task of promoting equality and social inclusion in Catalonia.

Every year, thanks to the intensive research programmes organised by the CRM, we host researchers from all over the world to conduct visits that range from 2 week to several months. This offers a unique environment to enhance the development of the research careers of women coming from underrepresented backgrounds, thus helping to redress the historical lack of diversity and gender balance existing in the mathematics field. The CRM acknowledges the need to implement measures to ensure that men and women are treated equally in the recognition of their work and professional development.

The CRM is currently developing its first Equality & Diversity Plan in order to set in motion concrete actions to be completed in the next three years, with the mission to improve the centre’s policies and remove barriers that may hinder the integration and career development of all the researchers that carry out their scientific activity at the CRM. This plan will help setting explicit mechanisms to assist with work-life balance, with the goal of recruiting and retaining more women in mathematics. It is a priority of the centre to counter the inequity in numbers between men and women entering mathematics training, in addition to the higher low rate of female mathematicians compared to their male colleagues at every transition stage in mathematical careers.

The group of centres CERCA and their research community work to ensure the respect and equality between the people involved in their activity. Both the research management and the eligibility, employability, institutional representation, distribution of resources and evaluation policies must be based on the fair valuation of people and avoid possible bias and discriminatory tendencies.

The implementation of the right action guidelines must lead to a balance that will generate greater creativity and excellence in the scientific and technological dynamics of the CRM.
