| Description: | Stacks were introduced in algebraic geometry by Grothendieck, Artin, Deligne and Mumford as a natural framework for studying moduli problems of geometric objects with symmetries. Besides these algebraic stacks, Grothendieck and Giraud also studied stacks and gerbes in order to give a geometric interpretation of higher non-abelian cohomology classes.
Recent developments in geometry and topology show that the analog notions of
differentiable and topological stacks are equally useful, for example in order
to construct cohomological invariants for orbifolds, construction of equivariant
cohomology theories, applications to string theory, etc. |
