PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

Key words

Convex and Nonsmooth Analysis, Monotone Operators, Local and Global methods in Optimization, Tame Optimization, Variational Analysis, Sensitivity Analysis, Control, Game Theory, applications.

Description

This research programme intends to deepen our knowledge in the field of well-structured optimization problems, in both theoretical and practical aspects by means of techniques of convex optimization and variational analysis. This research (often called tame optimization) seems promising of a considerable interdisciplinary impact in a broad spectrum of applications in fields as Control, PDEs, Mathematical Economics, Dynamical Systems …

Apart from a regular seminar, two main activities will take place within the period of the Program:

-The « Conference on Numerical Optimization and Applications in Engineering »

(Acronym: NUMOPEN-2010) Period: October 13-15, 2010

-The International Conference « Recent Advances in Optimization and Related Topics »

       (Acronym ADORT-2010) Period: November 29 – December 3, 2010.

Topics

During this period we will explore the following topics:

1)      Semi-infinite programming. Sensitivity analysis.

2)      Algorithmic study of nonconvex (and nonsmooth) optimization problems with a rich geometrical structure. Local and global aspects.

3)      Metric regularity, Tame Optimization and applications in Control.

4)      Asymptotic analysis of discrete and continuous dynamical systems.

5)      Monotone operators, representation theorems and applications to the proximal point algorithm.

6)      Spectral and SDP optimization.

Objectives

The main objective is to enhance our comprehension and build on the current state-of-the-art on each of the aforementioned topics. As a spin-off consequence the activities of the program are expected to promote the area of Variational Analysis and Optimization by setting-up building blocks for research collaborations among local and foreign research groups in optimization, through exchange of ideas, scientific cooperation and mobility of human resources.

PERSPECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

This assembly of some of the most important specialists of Optimization at the CRM is expected to push forward research on the above topics, produce significant advances on the field and give a new dynamism to the local team and to the young participants.
